School of Rock – Day 4 – Harmony Basics

SUMMARY

Today we did all of our rooms and had our breaks as usual, we also had an hour of practice time which was fun. We watched a Rock documentary at the end of the day which was pretty sick.

PRACTICE ROOM

  • This was fun I like practicing and figuring out the different qualities of Soundtrap and just getting better at playing the keyboard and drums.

CLASSROOM

Watch How Harmony Works (47 minutes)

1. Harmonics make up good melodies

2. The middle note of a minor chord is weaker which makes the song sadder or less happy.

3. Different major and minor chords can fit various moods.

4. The primary triads are the most widely used harmonies and they are very common in many different types of music.

Watch the tutorial and write some chords in HookPad

I learned that making harmonies is fun and i’m going to use this for now on.

OUTSIDE / JOURNAL / IDEAS

It really helps with understanding basic note structure.

  • Tonic (1 and 8 chords)
    • Root note creates a feeling of resolution and stability
  • Supertonic, Mediant, Submediant (2, 3, 6 chords)
    • Moderate tension, useful for transitions
  • Dominant, Subdominant, Leading Tone (4, 5, 7 chords)
    • Create lots of tension to get to the tonic

CONTROL ROOM

This was a fun activity, I made a cool little song that I played for the class and i thought it was actually pretty good.

WHAT I LEARNED and PROBLEMS I SOLVED

I really enjoyed just making beats on Soundtrap and playing around with the drum pad on the keyboard I borrowed. The movie that we watched at the end of the day was pretty cool too.

DAILY ACTIVITY EVALUATION
