School or Rock – Day 3 – Melody Basics

SUMMARY

Before lunch we watched a series of videos that explained how to compose and how to be creative they also told the basics on melody making. after lunch we did similar things but mostly consisted of us practicing and doing our own thing.

  1. Music has different modes and feels and they affect peoples moods depending on what emotions they want to affect.
  2. Blues music is created with the bending slightly of notes with blues notes.
  3. composers like the ability to rock between major and minor scales.

Melody Composition Terms

  • Theme – long melodic idea
  • Motive- short motive idea
  • Period-all 8 measures of music
  • Phrase- 4 measures of music
  • Antecedent (Question) Phrase- first phrase
  • Consequent (Answer) Phrase- second phrase
  • Scale Degrees- notes in measures
    • Tonic-begins the scale determine the key. creates a feeling of stability
    • Supertonic, Mediant, Submediant- the three notes that cause the most tention
    • Dominant, Subdominant, Leading Tone- the ones after those three notes
  • Steps- same steps that go after each other
  • Leaps- steps that move widely
  • Conjunct motion-
  • Disjunct motion-melody primarily using leaps
  • Repetition- repeated notes in a song
  • Contrast- contrasted notes that go well together
  • Variation- notes that are seemingly different and that move in diff. intervals

WHAT I LEARNED and PROBLEMS I SOLVED

Today was relaxed and I really enjoyed just figuring this classroom out. I got to try the electric drums which was pretty cool and I got to learn about music theory. we dove more in depth on Soundtrap and we finished the School of Rock movie.
